📂midnitetech's Sims 4 Mods Folder Organization Guide

This folder system is designed to keep your Sims 4 Mods folder clean and script-friendly.

Folder Descriptions

• IMPORTANT: Script mods must be no deeper than one subfolder (e.g., 5 Utility Mods/ModName).
• 👗 0 Gameplay Script Mods/—gameplay additions, not management tools.
• 👗 1 CAS Mods/—Hair, clothes, makeup, accessories — organize by creator or category.
• 🛏️ 2 Build-Buy Mods/ — Furniture, decor, build objects — place here.
• 🎮 3 Gameplay Mods/ — Traits, aspirations, careers, tuning mods — structured for easy navigation.
• 🔄 4 Overrides & Defaults/ — Skin defaults, eye replacements, makeup defaults — anything that overrides the game.
• 🛠️ 5 Utility Mods/ — UI Cheats, MC Command Center, Tuning Notifier — general utilities.

Important Notes

• ✅ Script mods (.ts4script) must be placed no more than one folder deep.
• ✅ You can organize .package files up to 5 folders deep (Mods being Folder 0).
• ✅ Keep mods from the same creator together if possible for easier updating, or group by category.
• ✅ Check for mod conflicts regularly, especially after game updates.
• ✅ Always back up your Mods folder before making big changes.

🎨 Optional: How to Add Custom Folder Icons (Windows)

Want to make your Mods folders look even better? Or even your desktop and other folders? You can apply custom Sims 4–themed folder icons using the free icon pack that I've created for download on the original post. (Inspired by @hamburgercakes version)

✅ Save the DLL in a permanent folder you won’t move or delete — if the DLL is moved, the icons linked to it will no longer display.

🛠 How to Apply the Custom Icons from the DLL

1. Right-click the folder you want to change.
2. Select Properties.
3. Go to the Customize tab.
4. Click Change Icon….
5. Click Browse….
6. Navigate to the folder where you saved:
   midnitetech_sims4_folder_icons.dll
7. Select midnitetech_sims4_folder_icons.dll and click Open.
8. Choose the icon you want from the list.
9. Click OK, then Apply, then OK again.

✅ Your folder should now display the new custom icon!
If it doesn’t show up right away, you may need to refresh your desktop or restart Windows Explorer.

🛑 Mini Troubleshooting Guide: If Your Mods Aren’t Showing Up

If your mods or custom content don’t appear in the game, check these common fixes:

• ✅ Enable Mods in Game
  Go to Game Options → Other. Make sure both Enable Custom Content and Mods and Script Mods Allowed are checked. Click Apply Changes and restart the game.
• ✅ Check Folder Depth
  Script mods (.ts4script) must be inside the Mods folder or one subfolder deep only.
  Example: Mods/5 Utility Mods/MyScriptMod/myfile.ts4script → ✅
  Example: Mods/5 Utility Mods/MyScriptMod/Subfolder/myfile.ts4script → ❌ won’t load.
• ✅ Make Sure Files Are Unzipped
  Mods should be .package or .ts4script files — not still inside .zip or .rar archives. Extract everything before placing into the Mods folder.
• ✅ Check for Required Mod Libraries or Dependencies
  Some mods need extra files (dependencies) to work, like:
  - midnitetech’s Mod Library
  - Lot51’s Core Library
  Without these, the mod may not function or even load. Always read the mod’s description and make sure you have any required library files installed.
• ✅ Watch for Broken or Outdated Mods
  After a game patch or update, some mods may break. Test by removing recent mods or checking the creator’s update notes.
• ✅ Clear the Game Cache
  Delete the localthumbcache.package file in your Sims 4 folder (this won’t harm your saves).
• ✅ Check for Conflicts
  Use a conflict detector tool like Better Exceptions or Tuning Notifier, or remove half your mods at a time to isolate the problem.
