History Stuff
The International Fixed Calendar (also known as the Cotsworth plan, the Eastman plan, the 13 Month calendar, or the Equal Month calendar) has been around for quite some time. The first detailed calendar proposal for this calendar was made in 1745. Interestingly, the French largely resisted this calendar, even when put forth by a French philosopher many decades later. It was seen as being contrary to tradition to change from the Gregorian system that had been in use for the previous century. Of course, they later introduced a monstrosity of a measurement system that was slowly forged into a useable system and eventually the SI/metric system...
The International Fixed Calendar League was founded in 1923, just after the plan was selected by the League of Nations as the best of 130 calendar proposals put forward. Sir Sandford Fleming, the inventor and driving force behind worldwide adoption of standard time, became the first president of the IFCL, and supported the plan. Unfortunately the adoption of the calendar was opposed by a certain nation at the League of Nations, and instead a modified or 'modern' gregorian system ended up being adopted. Thankfully a particular proposal for a calendar based on the metric system failed, as that system was uniquely idiotic. Later attempts at a metric-type calendar have also failed, thankfully.
Accidental Woman
In the world of Accidental Woman, the use of the calendar is more of a vicarious wish of mine, rather than actually being remotely possible to happen. In the AWU, the calendar was adopted in 2027, seeing use beginning with 2028. It occurred thanks to a chain reaction of political idiocy that somehow managed to result in something good happening. Incidentally, some of the key political entities involved in pushing the change through--such as Nouveau France--were adamantly against the change.
The world had plenty of problems coming to a head during this time period, and aside from a brief moment in the spotlight for the potential economic benefits of the government spending it would take to switch, the change happened without much fanfare. Once people took the time to convert their birthday to the new calendar, and perhaps a few other important dates like anniversaries, life went on pretty much exactly as it had before. There was, however, a spike in the use of the change as a plot item in sitcoms for forgetting an anniversary or birthday.
Rules:
While extremely similar to the International Fixed Calendar, the AW Calendar does have a couple minor differences. This means that not just any online date conversion tool will work.
Each year is divided into 13 months of 4 weeks (28 days) each. This totals 364 days.
The first day of the year is known as New Year Day and is considered a holiday. It is not a day of the week, and is day 0 of January. This day brings the calendar to 365 days for a full year.
An additional month, decided by Patreon Poll to be called "Sol" is inserted between June and July.
Leap years follow the same modern rule, every year divisible by 4 except years except those divisible by 100 that aren't also divisible by 400.
Rather than being added to February, the leap day is added at the beginning of Sol as day zero. It is considered a holiday called Liberty Day, but some nations use it to celebrate something different. (Note that this isn't a United States thing, but rather a celebration of personal freedom.) Liberty day occurs in the first year of game play, and should be an interesting event!
Monday is considered the first day of the week (day 1), and the weekend occurs on the last two days of the week (6 & 7) on Saturday and Sunday.
Advantages:
There are several advantages to using the fixed calendar, not least of which is how it makes time cycles (and balancing) in the game easier.
- The calendar is very standardized, with units subdivided into equal lengths throughout the year.
- Every year has exactly 52 weeks divided in 13 months.
- Each month has exactly 28 days divided in 4 weeks.
- Every day of the month falls on the same weekday in each month (i.e. the 17th always falls on a Tuesday).
- The calendar is the same every year (perennial), unlike the annual Gregorian calendar, which differs from year to year. Hence, scheduling is easier for institutions and industries with extended production cycles.
- Movable holidays celebrated on the nth certain weekday of a month, such as U.S. Thanksgiving day, would be able to have a fixed date while keeping their traditional weekday.
- Statistical comparisons by months are more accurate, since all months contain exactly the same number of business days and weekends, likewise for comparisons by 13-week quarters.
- Economically, thirteen equal divisions of the year are superior to twelve unequal divisions in terms of monthly cash flow in the economy.
- Budgeting is easier when income and expenses remain on the same day, and occur over the same time period throughout the year.
- The 13 month system more closely resembles the number of lunar cycles in a year (13), and also better follows the female menstrual cycle, making it easier to track these, along with other natural processes.
Disadvantages:
- 13 is a prime number, so the months in the year can't be evenly divided.
- Past (recurring) dates such as birthdays would have to be recalculated to fit the new system.
