Kevin sat on a couch in the middle of his living room, surrounded by a sea of boxes and furniture draped in white sheets. He’d be moving out in a few hours, leaving behind both the space and an old life he no longer recognized. Barely over a year ago, he was a burly construction worker with a full beard and muscles to spare. But one day, while lifting heavy materials on the site, he suffered a devastating accident that left him bedridden for months. During his recovery, the construction company convinced him to participate in a clinical trial for a new, experimental drug. The doctors assured him it’d help him heal faster and regain his strength, but they didn’t mention the medicine’s unusual side effects on some patients. There was a reason the trial was conducted secretly and why he’d signed an ironclad nondisclosure agreement. At first, he thought the drug was a miracle. Pain evaporated from his body like fog on a sunny day, and his energy returned tenfold. But as the weeks went on, Kevin noticed peculiar changes. His once-thick beard grew thinner while his once-muscular frame became softer and more delicate. He tried every exercise routine, but nothing returned him to his former self. His mind raced as he recalled the first conversation with Lily, his long-term girlfriend, about the changes: ‘Lily, I don’t understand what’s happening to me,’ he said, voice cracking. “My body... it’s changing, and I can’t control it.” Lily looked at him with concern, placing a gentle hand on his newly delicate arm. “We’ll figure this out together, okay? You’re still you, no matter what your body looks like. I love you for who you are, not what you look like.” But as his transformation continued, their relationship grew strained. His new appearance impacted everything from their social interactions to their intimacy. One night, after Kevin once again failed to make love to Lily, she sat on the edge of their bed, tears streaming down her face. “I can’t do this anymore, Kev,” she sobbed. “I love you. Like, it’s actually insane how much I love you. But I can’t handle these changes! I know I said I loved you for who you are-and that’s true-but this...this is too much for me. I can’t watch you suffer like this. I feel so helpless.” Although heartbroken, he understood. His voice, noticeably softer, was filled with sadness. “I don’t want you to suffer either. If you need to go, I…I understand.” With a final tearful embrace, Lily left his life, and he found himself genuinely alone in his new reality. Now, as whatever remained of Kevin sat on the couch, he felt a pang of utter despair. His hands instinctively went to his chest, gripping the soft, heavy mounds that now occupied the space where his pecs once were. Kevin glanced around the desolate apartment one last time before throwing on some of Lily’s old clothes (the only things that fit him these days) and grabbing the last box. His sister, Emily, had kindly offered to let him move in with her after he lost his job and couldn’t afford the rent. She’d even managed to find him a job opportunity, although it wasn’t one he ever imagined he’d be doing: waiting tables at a local restaurant. Emily had reassured him when he’d expressed concerns about working as a waitress. “It’s only temporary, big brother. Just until you get back on your feet. Besides, you’ll be great at it – you have a natural charm, and people will love you.” Reluctantly, Kevin agreed, knowing he didn’t have many options. He swallowed his pride and was determined to make the best of his situation, no matter how bizarre it had become. Standing in the doorway of his now-empty apartment, he took a deep breath, trying to steady himself. His thoughts were a whirlwind of memories of the life he once had and the man he once was. With a heavy heart, he closed the door behind him, leaving a part of himself behind.
